Geoeconomic Transformation of the Black Sea Region and Its Impact on Georgias Economic Positioning DOI: 10.52340/ekonomisti.2026.01.22 Expanded Summary The article examines the key trends in the geoeconomic transformation of the Black Sea region and their impact on Georgias economic positioning within the regional and global context. Geoeconomic changes related to global economic processes, regional integration, the transformation of transit routes, and energy security have a significant influence on Georgias development prospects. The study is based on theoretical approaches to geoeconomic analysis and regional economic analysis. Particular attention is paid to assessing Georgias transit function, logistics potential, and economic competitiveness within the geoeconomic environment of the Black Sea region. The article identifies the main opportunities and challenges that shape Georgias economic role in the region and its strategic importance in international economic relations. The Black Sea region constitutes a significant geostrategic space that serves as a connecting link between Europe and Asia, where economic, political, and cultural interests intersect. Against the backdrop of globalization and the deepening of international economic interdependence, the region has acquired increased geoeconomic significance, which is particularly evident in its transit, energy, and trade functions. At the same time, the geoeconomic dynamics of the region are closely intertwined with geopolitical developments, which further shape economic cooperation, connectivity, and security considerations. Beyond its energy dimension, the Black Sea region plays a significant role in maritime trade and regional connectivity. The region’s ports serve as key nodes in international cargo flows, facilitating trade between Europe, Asia, and the wider Eurasian space. This, in turn, acts as a catalyst for the development of logistics infrastructure, enhances transport connectivity, and contributes to the deepening of regional economic integration. In this context, the efficiency and competitiveness of transport corridors become critical factors in determining regional economic performance. For Georgia, the Black Sea region represents not only a geographical area but also a strategic economic space through which the country integrates into the global economy. In the context of regional geoeconomic transformation, Georgia’s ability to effectively utilize its geoeconomic potential becomes especially important. This is particularly relevant given the countrys aspiration to strengthen economic ties with the European Union and to position itself as a reliable transit hub within the broader Black Sea and Eurasian economic space. For Georgia, an accurate assessment of geoeconomic changes and the formulation of appropriate economic strategies are of critical importance. Strengthening the countrys transit function, developing infrastructure, and promoting economic diversification represent the key directions that will contribute to Georgias sustainable economic development within the geoeconomic space of the Black Sea region. These priorities also enhance the countrys resilience to external economic shocks and increase its long-term competitiveness. The purpose of this article is to analyze the geoeconomic transformation of the Black Sea region and to identify the key factors influencing Georgias economic positioning within both the regional and global economic systems. |
