Innovative Learning Models and Improving the Quality of Education: The Experience of Danish Game-Based Learning in Georgia

In the contemporary educational environment, increasing importance is attached to the development of innovative teaching approaches that ensure the comprehensive advancement of students’ cognitive, social, and emotional competencies. The rapid development of digital technologies, the expansion of the knowledge economy, and the transformation of labor market demands have fundamentally changed the role and functions of education systems worldwide. Modern education is no longer limited to the transmission of theoretical knowledge; instead, it is increasingly focused on fostering critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, problem-solving skills, and technological literacy. Within this context, game-based learning has emerged as one of the most effective and innovative pedagogical approaches in modern education.

The present study aims to analyze the Danish “Playful Learning” model and evaluate the possibilities of integrating its principles into the Georgian educational system. The research examines the theoretical foundations of game-based learning, its relationship with STEM education, and the role of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in the educational process. Particular attention is devoted to the Danish educational model, which is internationally recognized as one of the most progressive and student-centered systems in Europe.

The research is based on a mixed-methods approach and includes comparative analysis, content analysis, and the review of international scientific literature and educational policy documents. The study analyzes international educational strategies, including the approaches of UNESCO, OECD, and European educational frameworks, as well as contemporary research related to innovative teaching methods and digital transformation in education.

The theoretical framework of the study is grounded in constructivist educational theories developed by Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky, and John Dewey. According to these approaches, learning becomes more effective when students actively participate in the process of knowledge construction through interaction, experimentation, and practical experience. Game-based learning is therefore considered not merely an entertaining activity, but a significant educational mechanism that enhances students’ engagement and supports experiential learning.

The study demonstrates that the Danish educational model effectively integrates game-based learning into the teaching process through interactive activities, simulations, collaborative projects, STEM-oriented experiments, and problem-based learning approaches. In Danish schools, teachers act primarily as mentors and facilitators, while students become active participants in the learning process. Such an educational environment contributes to the development of critical thinking, communication skills, creativity, teamwork, and practical competencies.

The research highlights the significant impact of game-based learning on educational quality. It has been identified that this approach increases students’ motivation, engagement, and independent thinking while simultaneously improving their analytical and technological skills. In particular, game-based learning plays an essential role in STEM education by enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical and simulated environments.

Special emphasis is placed on the role of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in modern education. AI systems create opportunities for personalized learning by adapting educational content to students’ individual needs and learning styles. The integration of AI technologies with game-based learning models enhances flexibility, interactivity, and the effectiveness of the educational process.

The study also identifies several challenges within the Georgian educational system, including the dominance of traditional teaching methods, insufficient development of practical skills, unequal technological infrastructure, and the need for teachers’ professional development in digital competencies. These challenges significantly hinder the implementation of innovative learning models in schools, particularly in regional areas.

The paper concludes that the integration of Danish game-based learning practices into the Georgian educational context could contribute significantly to improving educational quality and developing modern competencies among students. However, successful implementation requires systemic reforms, modernization of curricula, development of STEM education, enhancement of digital infrastructure, and continuous teacher training.

The study further emphasizes that innovative educational models should not only focus on academic achievement but also contribute to the formation of creative, technologically competent, and critically thinking individuals capable of adapting to the demands of the 21st-century labor market and digital society.
